It's been a while, but I couldn't not write a review on this film! Back in April I saw Avengers: Endgame (at a midnight showing, no less!), dir. by Joe and Anthony Russo and starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson, to name a few. Here's what I thought...

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

Plot & Story

Now I'm gonna preface this a little bit by saying I am a huge MCU fan, and while I thought this film was brilliant I do think a lot of that had to do with the emotional attachment I have to the story and the characters. That being said however, I still believe this film is a work of art and anyone who appreciates a good action movie, wonderful acting or just good movies in general will really love it.

It was of course the conclusion to the MCU as we know it, and I think it was a lovely way to wrap everything up. I went into it, frankly, terrified, after the events of Infinity War, as there had just been too much heartache and I was not prepared to go through that again. However, while this movie definitely does have its fair share of heartache, a lot of it for me came from watching the end of an era unfold in front of me, which in a way, was quite lovely. It was Marvel at its finest, with a delicious mix of serious and hilarious, and the balance of the two was just perfect (like all things should be?).

My only gripe would be the joke surrounding Thor. The reveal was, of course, hysterical and unexpected, but when I saw it becoming his only character trait throughout the movie, apart from potentially the end, I started to long for the Thor I knew and loved. Saying that though, the jokes surrounding it were all decently funny, and for me it was just such a minor blip in what is a masterpiece all round.

Characters & Performances

Where can I even start with this? There were so so many brilliant performances in this film, every single actor and actress went 100% and in my opinion they all delivered the performance of a lifetime.

In regards to characters, I really loved everyone, more so than I ever had before. This was the most human we'd ever seen these characters, because they were all surrounded by this feeling of failure after Infinity War, and they not only had lost the war, but their own personal battles as well. It gave us a deeper, more personal exploration of these characters we have loved for so long, showing them in a new light we haven't gotten to see until now.

I just have to mention the end scene, I can't not, I can't stop thinking about it even now. The full body chills I got when Sam's voice came through and those sling rings started appearing will never ever be matched by any film ever, I'm pretty sure. The cinema burst into applause when it happened and I've never known atmosphere like it; utterly incredible. To watch every character you have learned to love over 10 years, all those people you thought you'd lost, come back and fight for their lives, to hear Cap say those magical words again, it was just the most fantastic experience and I feel so lucky I was able to experience it the way I did.

Direction & Cinematography

I've always thought that there was just something about Marvel films, where you could look at them with no context and no indication and you would still just be able to tell its a Marvel film. They have such a unique look about them, crisp and beautiful and so colourful. The soundtrack will never not give me shivers, everyone's own themes and the way they're used is always so stimulating. The wonderful thing about Marvel films is that everything is done for a reason, nothing is thrown in for fun everything tends to mean something, which just makes for a more interesting story overall. Basically, the Russo Bros. did it again, working to their absolute best and making their fans proud.

Personal Opinions

Well, I think by now you can probably tell what I thought of it. I can't help but speak highly of it; for a fan of the MCU is is an absolute dream, giving us everything we could ever have wanted in a finale. It had everything from hysterical laughter to hysterical sobbing, and I have no doubt it will become a classic of our time, and I am so blessed to have been able to see it the way I did.

Final rating: ★★★★★
